Monet
Written in a darkened corner at The National Gallery, London; whilst listening to an American tour-guide criticise the artist's technique.
Water lilies
On canvas float
Are watched by men
But not in boats
They stand upon
A parquet shore
Detecting all
But slightest flaws
Windows shine high
To set alight
To send the colours
Into flight
The critics come
The critics go
The pictures, paints
Remain on show

This must have been written pre-1997, because the painting has been onloan to the Tate since then.
